Roots in Urban Ecology and a Passion for Practical Solutions

Kevin Ashmore grew up in a modest neighborhood on the outskirts of Boston, where weekend afternoons often meant collecting secondhand items with his family or watching local artists transform scrap metal into sculptures. Those early experiences sparked a fascination with the hidden potential of discarded materials. While his friends pursued more typical hobbies, Kevin gravitated toward the challenge of turning waste into something useful or beautiful. That early curiosity became the foundation of his lifelong belief that recycling and reuse can be both practical and inspiring.

From Environmental Studies to Field Experience

After high school, Kevin pursued a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies at a state university known for its strong urban sustainability program. His summers were spent working with a “zero waste” startup in Portland, Oregon, redesigning waste collection routes and testing small scale composting systems.

The mix of academic study and hands on problem solving gave him a deep understanding of how policies meet daily habits and how even modest changes in recycling and reuse can create meaningful impact.

Building Atlanta Recycles Before It Was a Blog

When Kevin relocated to Atlanta in 2016, he brought his passion with him. By 2017, he was volunteering with local clean-up drives, helping organize the city’s recycling fairs, and running free workshops at libraries, schools, and farmers markets.

These sessions covered everything from preventing contamination in recycling bins to crafting DIY home projects from common household waste. Over the years, he built a library of guides, checklists, and real life examples from Atlanta’s recycling successes.

By the time he launched atlantarecycles.com in 2025, it was more than a new website it was the digital extension of nearly a decade of community-based work.
